One type of connection ideal for audio is the digital optical. This is arguably the easiest and the most straightforward method to use to improve your TV listening experience. You will only need to connect your Samsung smart TV’s analog stereo outputs, usually referred to as RCA outputs, to your external audio system such as home theater. Connecting a soundbar using an optical cable is one of the easiest ways to get the audio from your TV to your soundbar. All you need is a soundbar that has an optical digital output and an optical digital input. In this guide, I share a method of connecting a soundbar to a TV without ARC support using optical cable.

On many newer TVs, RCA or 3.5mm analog connections are no longer available. This means that if you are buying a new TV, and your soundbar or audio system only has analog audio inputs, you need to make sure that the TV you purchase has the analog audio output option. If not, you may have to get a soundbar or audio system that provides either the digital optical audio or HDMI-ARC connection options discussed in the next two sections.

How to Connect Your TV to an External Audio System

When it comes to audio, ARC is more efficient than S/PDIF. ARC is more advanced, though, and supports 5.1 surround sound and can be used with surround sound systems. Therefore, it’s better to have a separate audio device, such as a soundbar, in order to enjoy the best audio. But, if you’re using a TV speaker, ARC will help you improve your audio quality. Nonetheless, if you do not want a lot of cables lying around on your floor, you may want to go with this method. The menu layout of different TV models will vary, but once you have found your wireless connections or audio output selection sections, there are similar steps you will need to follow.

If you have a newer HDTV or one that supports Digital Audio Output, connecting your TV to a soundbar via optical cables is the best way to go. Optical cables deliver high-quality digital audio … without distortion, loss of data, or noise, resulting in crystal-clear sound. After connecting the cable to both the TV and the home theater receiver, switch the home theater receiver on and follow the setup instructions of your audio system. When you switch your receiver on, instructions on how to change your TV’s audio output settings should appear on the screen. If nothing happens, you can just go into your TV’s audio settings and change the audio output mode manually. When you are trying to play the TV sound through your home theater system speakers, you are going to have to access the menus in all of the devices.

Using a Digital-To-Analog Converter

If you can’t find the optical port on your Samsung TV, try connecting the TV to a soundbar or external speakers. Next, connect your smart TV remote control to your home theater system. To do this, press the home button on your smart TV’s remote and select the Settings option.

Be aware that you won’t be able to power an entire set of home theater speakers without more speaker or amp channels . If you’re wanting to use a multi-speaker audio system you might want to consider getting a budget home theater unit that can power surround speakers as well. TVs with RCA output jacks or 3.5mm stereo out can use RCA cables to connect to a small amplifier to get sound.

Why Use Home Theater System Speakers to Play TV Sound

If you have a big-screen TV, it’s common to have it be the focal point of your living room. It’s also likely that you want the sound quality to be top notch, especially if you plan to watch a lot of movies at home. One way to improve the sound quality of your TV is to connect a soundbar. Unfortunately, soundbars don’t have a ton of connection options. So does that mean if you have no audio out ports on your TV, you can’t connect a soundbar?

Whichever connecting method you select you'll need to update your TV sound setting. From settings navigate to sound, and over to the Sound Out bar. There is no doubt that Samsung smart televisions are among the best out there on the market.

After you have done this, now proceed by turning both appliances on. Subsequently, connect the same RCA plugs to your home theater system’s audio in ports. This AVR is from 2010, AVR's in that early ARC time frame didn't support or never got updated to support DD+ over ARC. Some devices with weak luminous signal and poor received signal may not be able to use the splitter. There is no sound when the AUDIO OUT jack of a TV is connected to the TV AUDIO IN jack of the Home Theater System.

HDMI 2.0 supports up to 14 gigabits of bandwidth, and is compatible with most audio devices. HDMI 2.0 also supports 60 frames per second, and is ideal for home theater systems. It also supports ARC, which allows audio signals to be sent along the HDMI cable. In addition, HDMI is compatible with many different devices, including smart speakers and game consoles. This means that you can connect your home theater system with your TV without a lot of cable clutter.

For the sound setup, you will use the basic red and white audio cables and match the colors with each other between the devices. This is basically the white to the white on the output on the TV and the input on the home theater device. From there, your cable must be connected to your sound source, which will be the receiver or sound bar, depending on your setup. In the setup menu of the TV, you can disable the TV speakers, and your TV will be the sound source. Using an HDMI-ARC connection will let you connect your TV to your receiver for both video and audio purposes with a single cable. This means you do not have to invest in an extra RCA or digital optical cable, and it will keep the cable situation behind your TV less cluttered.

Switch the home theater receiver on and follow the instructions presented on your TV screen. As soon as you switch your receiver on, instructions on how to change your TV’s audio output settings should appear on the screen. Digital outputs are those where an audio signal is transmitted as digital signals made up of bits of information. Some home receivers with the same connections can connect to these directly and “decode” them to be amplified and drive speakers. If you want to play audio on your TV and other connected sound systems simultaneously, look for the Multi-output Audio option in the sound settings.

You might need to download a Bluetooth app to your device first. You’ll read directions in the app and then connect to your TV. After that, you use the app to adjust the volume, choose the input, and play any music or videos you want.

You can use a small &affordable amplifier like this one to power your home theater speakers without using a receiver. A TV cannot drive speakers directly so you’ll need an amplifier to drive home theater speakers or consider using powered speakers instead. Because life waits for no one, at LG USA we create consumer electronics, appliances and mobile devices that are designed to help you connect with those who matter most. And remember volume will now be adjusted by the remote for the external device or by a knob if there is one.

Many displays have multiple HDMI inputs but only one of them will be labeled eARC. Receivers are the same with usually two HDMI outputs, only one of which will be labeled HDMI eARC. If there is a question that is more ubiquitous in home theater than transferring sound from one place to another, I don’t know what it is. When display manufacturers started including streaming apps, we knew this question was going to get more pressing. Everyone was going to want to know how to get the streaming app sound from their TV to play through their home theater systems speakers.
